Hyderabad: A simple "Like" on social media could become the first step into a dangerous terror network, according to recent investigations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Security agencies have uncovered multiple cases where individuals were allegedly targeted through Instagram and other social media platforms. Terror-linked handlers reportedly used likes, comments, and private messages to identify vulnerable users, gradually influencing them with extremist content.
In one case, a hotel worker in Hyderabad was allegedly radicalized after interacting with suspicious social media accounts. In another, a woman from Hyderabad was reportedly drawn into online extremist circles through Instagram reels. Investigators also revealed a terror conspiracy involving individuals from Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad, where online connections played a crucial role.
Experts warn that extremist groups often use a method known as the "Magic Lantern" technique—posting provocative content and identifying users who engage with it. These users are then contacted privately and slowly exposed to radical ideologies.
Authorities advise social media users to remain vigilant, avoid engaging with suspicious content, and report any accounts promoting violence, hatred, or anti-national activities.
